As of the first quarter of 2007, data from Forbes show that in the US alone, hybrids garnered a combined sale of more than 17,000 units, a remarkable 10% increase from the same period in 2006. The demand is definitely rising, and this demand is translating into actual sales. Sale of hybrid vehicles vis-à-vis the total number of light-duty vehicles sold also increased by as much as 1.4% compared to previous year levels. This only means more and more buyers prefer hybrids to conventional-fuel models.

Why the Rush to the Hybrid Section?

As fuel prices soar, more and more car buyers are prompted to go for hybrid cars. Since 2003, hybrid car-makers have been raking in profits from hybrid car sales. In 2004 in the US alone, hybrid car sales were almost 88,000 units. And with the increasing awareness about climate change and global warming, hybrid car sales are yet again expected to surge.

With great expectations for hybrid car sales to reach record highs in 2007, car makers are rushing to put into the market new models, packed with all the environmental protection and fuel efficiency features that they could muster, not to mention the technological come-ons. New models are also widening the array of offerings, from compact to mid-sized sedans, to SUVs and minivans, even to pickups and trucks.

Car buyers can afford to be choosy with the broad range of hybrid units being offered in the market today. Moreover, fuel-efficiency and environmental friendliness features of these hybrids are reaching new heights, captivating a new kind of socially conscious and responsible breed of buyers.

Prices are reasonable enough to guarantee a following. Moreover, tax incentives and breaks are given to buyers of these eco-friendly hybrid units. Doing the math, the hybrid buyer is aware that he can easily recoup the few thousand dollars difference of a hybrid model over that of a conventional one, through reduced fuel consumption.

Safety And Efficiency

And these hybrids come safe for the buyer and his family, too. In addition to fuel efficiency, hybrid safety features are bringing in more buyers. Open the windows and the low emissions of your hybrid ensure that your kids are breathing fresher and cleaner air inside and outside the hybrid van. Navigation and stability systems for the hybrids are also a notch higher, adding to the safety factor more. A hybrid car buyer is assured of efficiency not only fuel-wise, but overall car performance-wise.

As buyers become more fuel-price conscious and more aware of climate change and the effects of greenhouse gases; as they realize that safety is paramount, and begin to expect comfort and enjoyment from riding safe and eco-friendly vehicles, hybrid car sales will continue to rise. Car makers are thus capitalizing on this trend and are coming up with one innovative hybrid model after another. Every car dealer will surely have one hybrid in his stable.

Is it turning out to be impractical to have a car? With an economic climate that is performing poorly and fuel prices constantly soaring, many people are thinking they would rather own a bike. Some are also ready to surrender their car and be content with public transportation. Nevertheless, there are several cars that are very efficient on gasoline and these cars are hybrids. However, before running out and purchasing one, what exactly is a hybrid car?

In case you have no knowledge about a hybrid car, it is the same as an ordinary car, except that it has two motors. One of these engines is really a regular gas burning motor - and the second is electric. Hybrid autos merge the 2 forms of motors to achieve significantly better gas mileage. The electric motor is powered by batteries, that would have to be charged by plugging them into a power outlet from your home in the past. These days, we use the wasted energy that is generated by the car when it brakes to slow down and use it to actually keep the batteries charged up. So now, while you motor about in your new hybrid, the working system will automatically switch between the gas and electric motors based on power requirements. the speed you're driving is one factor. Furthermore, if more power is suddenly needed, both engines can function together to provide a power boost.

Considering that the electric power produces no pollutants, not only is a hybrid cleaner to operate, but gets better mileage because when the car is using electric power, it is not using any gas. This can get you 50 miles to the gallon, as compared to what you have now, possibly 15 to 20 mpg. Plus, you do significantly less damage to the environment. The hybrid car is the best choice for you, if you are concerned about the environment as well as wanting to save on the amount you spend on fuel. Owning a hybrid will enable you to do both, but it could cost you about $5,000 more in the beginning to purchase a hybrid.

That is the primary factor that will keep many people from buying a hybrid car. When you determine the decrease in fuel intake, and the extra tax incentives, that makes it a better deal. Many people have a worry that insurance costs will be more, as well as the same for maintenance costs. In actuality, research has proven that repair expenses don't go up with a hybrid. In addition, there are insurance rate savings available, because people who drive hybrids get involved in less accidents.

If it's reaching the time for you to obtain a new car, do yourself a favor and at least check out a hybrid or two. The main thing: You are going to cut costs at the pump, enjoy a significant tax break, and be working at your share to clean up our environment. Carpe diem!
